CAC Name Reservation - Why It Starts at ₦1,000 and Why It Matters
Before any CAC registration, you must reserve your business name. Here's how it works, what it costs (from ₦1,000), and the rules that get names rejected.

Every CAC registration - Business Name, LTD, or Incorporated Trustees - starts with name reservation. CAC checks if your proposed name is available, then locks it for you for 60 days while you complete full registration. Pricing starts from ₦1,000 upward depending on the entity type and processing tier.
What name reservation actually does
- Confirms the name isn't already taken on the CAC register
- Reserves the name in your favour for 60 days
- Lets you proceed to full registration without someone else grabbing it
- Required by CAC before any incorporation can be filed
Common reasons names get rejected
- Too similar to an existing CAC-registered entity
- Contains restricted words (Federal, National, Bank, Insurance, Holdings) without approvals
- Misleading objects vs the name (e.g. 'University' for a consulting firm)
- Trademarked terms owned by another party
- Wrong suffix for the entity type (LTD vs Enterprise vs Foundation)
Submit two name options
CAC lets you propose two names per application - always use both. If the first is rejected, the second can sail through without paying again. AMG pre-checks both before filing.
Don't waste ₦1,000+ on a rejection
