How to Open a Corporate Bank Account in Nigeria (Without Getting Rejected)

GTBank, Zenith, Access, UBA, Wema, Sterling, Stanbic - they all want the same documents. Miss one and your account sits in limbo for weeks.

A common pattern: founder finishes CAC, walks into a bank, fills the forms - and three weeks later the account is still 'pending'. Almost always it's a missing document or a SCUML gap.

The full 2026 documentation checklist

  • CAC certificate + Status Report (or CTC of CO2, CO7)
  • Memorandum & Articles of Association (LTD)
  • TIN (FIRS) - banks pull it from FIRS but you must have activated it
  • SCUML certificate (mandatory for DNFBPs - consulting, NGO, real estate, hotels, schools, jewellery, supermarkets, car dealers, etc.)
  • Board resolution authorising account opening + signatories
  • Two passport photos per signatory + valid government ID + NIN
  • Utility bill of business address (≤ 3 months old)
  • Two reference letters (often from existing corporate accounts)
  • Specimen signatures

Common rejection reasons

  • TIN auto-issued but never claimed → bank can't verify
  • SCUML missing for a DNFBP business
  • Director NIN mismatch with CAC record
  • Utility bill in a different address from CAC record
  • Mismatched name capitalisation between CAC and ID
