Nigerian Trademark - Step-by-Step Filing Walkthrough

Trademarks confuse founders because the timeline is long and the process is opaque. Here's exactly what happens between the day you file and the day your certificate arrives.

Step 1 - Search & class selection

The Nice Classification has 45 classes. Pick the WRONG class and your registration won't protect your real business. A skincare brand needs Class 3 (cosmetics), not Class 35 (retail services). AMG runs a free clearance search before you pay any government fee.

Step 2 - Filing & acknowledgement

Once we file, you receive an acknowledgement number - that's when you can legally start using the 'TM' badge next to your brand. Government fee typically starts from ₦40,000 per class upward; confirm the current fee with AMG.

Step 3 - Examination (3–6 months)

The Registrar examines your mark for conflicts and compliance. Most rejections happen here - for similarity to existing marks, descriptive words, or wrong class.

Step 4 - Acceptance & publication

If accepted, your mark is published in the Trademarks Journal for opposition. Anyone has 2 months to oppose. Most don't.

Step 5 - Certificate (18–24 months total)

After the opposition window closes, you receive your registration certificate. Protection lasts 7 years, renewable for 14-year periods.
